Air Force recruiting specialists
The Air Force is struggling to recruit thousands of linguists, health care professionals and rescue airmen at the same time it is slashing 40,000 other jobs.
With a $22 million advertising campaign that includes splashy television commercials but focuses largely on the Internet, the service is trying to tell young people that the Air Force is still looking to fill critical jobs, despite its shrinking size.
The problem, said Brig. Gen. Suzanne Vautrinot, commander of the Air Force’s recruiting service, is that many people have heard the Air Force is chopping thousands of jobs.
“We are hiring. We are absolutely hiring,” she said in an Associated Press interview.
To help meet its job-cut targets, the Air Force plans to scale back its recruiting by about 10 percent. It will begin taking in about 27,800 recruits annually, compared with the nearly 30,900 recruited in the year that ended Sept. 30.
Since the Air Force generally meets its recruiting goals, the service may have to either turn people away or redirect some recruits toward jobs more in demand, such as linguists or medical staff.
As part of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld’s effort to modernize the military, the Air Force must reduce its active duty service members from about 351,000 last month to 334,000 by next Sept. 30, and to 316,000 by 2009.
The Air Force plan would also eliminate roughly 2,000 civilian jobs, and the remainder of the cuts would come from reserves. There would be no reduction in the number of slots in the Air National Guard, though additional savings would come from its budget.
Rumsfeld has argued that a key to building a more agile, better equipped force is to invest in technologies that allow the military to do more with fewer people.
Vautrinot said the Air Force is trying to bring in 1,200 linguists. The job of security officer routinely has the most openings, but she said those posts are easier to fill because they don’t require specialized skills.
“We’re not going to be the same Air Force only smaller,” said Brig. Gen. K.C. McClain, who helps oversee the service’s personnel planning. “It’s going to be a different Air Force … (and) we’re using the savings to modernize our fleet.”
McClain said the challenge is to eliminate jobs without losing needed professionals. Among the positions targeted for cuts are judge advocates general and people working in personnel, logistics and communications.
About 2,000 uniformed and civilian personnel have applied for a voluntary discharge or separation bonus program that started Oct. 1. Air Force officials said they need 3,200 workers to apply for the program by the end of next January.
There also will be an early retirement program offered to certain levels of colonels and lieutenant colonels — with the Air Force hoping up to 30 percent of those targeted take the buyout offer.
The advertising campaign is slightly less costly than previous Air Force media campaigns. It’s just a fraction of the $200 million-a-year advertising contract the Army announced recently.
The Air Force campaign boasts its new slogan, “Do Something Amazing.” It will send viewers to a Web site where they can view longer videos of service members talking about their jobs. The site includes videos of the service’s more elite members, from special operations forces to the Thunderbirds precision flying team.
Officials said they saved money by using real airmen.
In one video, a special operations aerial gunner talks about his job: “(We) go in countries that people don’t even know we flew into. Drop people off that people don’t even know exist. And pick them back up and bring them back home, and nobody will ever know we were there.”

The war of words, tough even for this hard-fought campaign season, came after Kerry told a group of California students on Monday that those unable to navigate the country’s education system “get stuck in Iraq.”
The two parties are searching for any edge amid indications Democrats could take back the House and possibly win control of the Senate in next week’s midterm elections. Though neither Bush nor Kerry is on any ballot, the bitterness with which they fought each other as 2004 rivals spilled over as both campaign hard for their parties in a race shaped in large measure by public doubts about the Iraq war.
White House press secretary Tony Snow was asked about Kerry’s comment at his regular briefing with reporters, and had clearly come prepared with a lengthy attack. He said the quote “fits a pattern” of negative remarks about U.S. soldiers from the decorated Vietnam veteran and suggested that whether Democratic candidates - particularly those running on their military service backgrounds - agree with their 2004 standard-bearer should be a campaign litmus test.
Bush statement asks for apology
The White House also released in advance remarks Bush was to deliver later in the day while campaigning in Georgia, in which the president called Kerry’s statement “insulting and shameful.” Bush, like his spokesman earlier, said soldiers deserve an apology from Kerry.
“Our troops did not enlist because they did not study hard in school or do their homework,” Bush said in his prepared remarks for a former GOP congressman, Mac Collins, who is trying to oust Democratic Rep. Jim Marshall. “The men and women who serve in our all-volunteer armed forces are plenty smart and are serving because they are patriots.”
Kerry, who is considering another run for the White House in 2008, angrily fired back.
His statement called Republicans “assorted right-wing nut jobs.”
And at a hastily arranged news conference in Seattle, Kerry said: “I apologize to no one for my criticism of the president and of his broken policy.”
Kerry explanation
Kerry said the comment in question was “a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops … and they know that’s what I was talking about.”
It came during a campaign rally for California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides. Kerry opened his speech at Pasadena City College with several one-liners, saying at one point that Bush had lived in Texas but now “lives in a state of denial.”
He then said: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
That, Kerry said, was meant as a reference to Bush, not troops. Kerry said it is the president who owes U.S. soldiers an apology - for “a Katrina foreign policy” that misled the country into war in Iraq, failed to adequately study and plan for the aftermath, has not properly equipped troops and has expanded the terrorist threat.
The Massachusetts Democrat called the White House attack “a classic GOP textbook Republican campaign tactic” that reveals Republicans’ “willingness to reduce anything in America to raw politics.”
“I’m sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won’t take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes,” he said. “It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who’ve never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did.”
Unsubstantiated allegations about Kerry’s Vietnam War heroism from a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth figured prominently in the 2004 Kerry-Bush race. Even Kerry has blamed his slow and uncertain response to the group’s claims for helping to doom his White House chances, and Democrats viewed the Tuesday fracas as a test of that lesson.
“Enough is enough. We’re not going to stand for this,” Kerry said. “We are going to stay in their face with the truth.”
Election issue?
Other Republicans, sensing opportunity for their side, piled on throughout the day with their own demands for an apology from Kerry.
GOP Sen. John McCain, like Kerry a decorated Vietnam veteran and a potential 2008 rival, said while campaigning for Republican candidates in Indiana that “the suggestion that only the least educated Americans would agree to serve in the military and fight in Iraq is an insult to every soldier serving in combat today.”
Added House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., struggling to keep his party in control of Congress: “Our soldiers risk their lives in the face of grave dangers on the battlefield, and no one who chooses to courageously and selflessly defend our country can be considered ‘uneducated.’ “
Separately, the White House issued President Bush’s Veterans’ Day proclamation praising those who have served in the armed forces - a week and a half before the holiday.
One Week today YEAH!!!

Wrong Receipt at AAFES Worth More Than Just a Free DrinkDALLAS – “A few dishonest associates are stealing your MWR benefit and AAFES needs your help to stop it,” said AAFES’ Director of Loss Prevention.
As a military command with a retail mission, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) is constantly evaluating Loss Prevention measures to maximize the annual dividend returned to military Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs. One Loss Prevention measure that has been especially successful in eliminating employee theft actually enlists the support of PX/BX shoppers through the promise of a free drink or other promotional coupons for anyone who identifies an inaccuracy on their receipt.
“While we have signs all over the exchange advising customers of the offers, it is important to note that this effort goes far beyond free beverages, it’s really a critical loss prevention tool that allows AAFES to partner with customers to mitigate loss,” said Director of Loss Prevention Col. Jorge Garza. “AAFES recruits the customer, makes them part of the team and provides a token of appreciation to those who report inaccuracies. By taking the time to review their receipt, these ‘crime fighters’ help protect their dividends and ultimately strengthen the exchange benefit at home and to our deployed warriors abroad.”
At the beginning of this month, the customer/associate partnership helped catch an employee who had been ringing up 20 cent meals as separate transactions not connected with meal purchases. A shopper at the Fort Lewis Food Court noticed the associate had under rang their purchase and brought it to the attention of the Food Court Manager.
When interviewed, the associate admitted to using the upgrade key to create a 20-cent charge, while collecting money for a complete meal which was later removed from the register. The resulting AAFES Loss Prevention investigation found that the Fort Lewis Food Court associate had stolen $3,500 and given away $40 of free food since April 2006.
As a result of the receipt effort, the military community will recover $3,540 through a signed promissory note, and the potential for future loss has been reduced as separation actions against the associate have been initiated. Furthermore, the Fort Lewis Military Police issued a citation and the Federal Prosecutor is reviewing the case for criminal prosecution.
“This had been going on for months, but it took a customer’s sharp eye to help us catch a thief and recover funds that belong to the military community,” said Col. Garza. “It is my sincere hope that all authorized exchange customers will follow the lead of our Fort Lewis shopper and double check their receipts.”
The sale of goods and services at AAFES operations in 2005 aided in the return of $229 million to military MWR programs. For 2005, AAFES paid a per capita dividend of $234 for every Soldier and Airman. “Every penny counts, in today’s budget constraint environment,” said Col. Garza. “Taking a few moments to ensure you’re charged correctly won’t only get you a free drink, but will also help maximize your return on the investment through increased dividends, potentially lower prices and more importantly, it allows AAFES to go where America’s warriors go.”
UPDATE Valor-It

By John
**Update**
Uh oh. We were dipping in and out of second place last night, but when I woke up this morning we were bringing up the rear. We can do better Airmen! Remember our creed:
Hello,
The previous was from the OP-for site.
I know that some of you are currently busy getting your children or yourselves ready to celebrate Halloween. I just want you to take a moment and open up your heart to donate to a very powerful project. Sometimes people don’t have that much extra cash but if you can cut out maybe two lunches of eating out or don’t get a starbucks coffee for a few days or maybe don’t get that 12 pack of beer for this weekend. You can then take that money and donate it to Valor-IT.
Take a moment to imagine what it would be like not to be able to use your hands. We tend to take things for granted when we do have the ability. These young men and women not only served our country to protect our rights and freedoms but gave up their use of their hands in the process. I’m sure there are other injuries that use these computers too.
Please give up a few dollars for those who have given so much.
Thank You ~Denise
Donate now! Be a part of a great thing!

| Shipping deadlines set for overseas holiday mail By Lisa Burgess, Stars and Stripes
ARLINGTON, Va. — Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or just a mid-winter break, it’s time to get those packages in the mail to loved ones stationed overseas. Postal officials have announced this year’s shipping deadlines for delivery by Dec. 25. Mail being shipped from overseas bases back to the United States follows generally the same guidelines, even though it travels slightly differently through the military postal system. Mailing items early is always a good idea to beat the holiday rush, postal service officials said. In addition to the First Class and Priority Mail services most people use, the U.S. Post Office is highlighting less-familiar services for family and friends sending packages to servicemembers overseas. Express Mail Military Service provides quicker delivery and is available at selected military post offices. Another less-familiar service is Parcel Airlift Mail, which provides air transportation for packages on a space-available basis. The Post Office offers this option for items not exceeding 30 pounds in weight or 60 inches in length and girth combined. A third option is Space Available Mail, which uses surface transportation domestically to move a parcel that has been paid at Parcel Post rates and then shifts to air transport to move it overseas on a space-available basis. The maximum weight and size limits of a package sent this way are 15 pounds and 60 inches in length and girth combined. For more information, go to the Postal Service Web site at www.usps.com. |

- “At that time I had no use of either hand. I know how humbling it is, how humiliating it feels. And I know how much better I felt, how amazingly more functional I felt, after Soldiers’ Angels provided me with a laptop and a loyal reader provided me with the software. I can’t wait to do the same, to give that feeling to another soldier at Walter Reed.” - Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss at TC Override
- Blog and email regularly about Valour-IT and the competition
- Tell your friends, family and neighbors about Valour-IT
- Put up these flyers around your community (I put one up at my local Starbucks).
Want to be part of something big?
Valour-IT’s online fundraising competition begins today! Let’s see who can raise the most money to help reconnect our wounded warriors with the world!
WHAT: Friendly fundraising competition for Valour-IT.
WHEN: October 30th through Veterans Day, November 10th .
WHERE: Based in the blogosphere, spreading everywhere else.
WHY: Because giving wounded warriors with hand and arm injuries access to a computer supports their healing and puts them back in touch with the world.
HOW: Blogger teams will be divided along military branches, with civilians “up for grabs.”
The lines are drawn by service rivalry:
- Jarheads (Marines) will be led by Villainous Company
Zoomies (Air Force) will be led by Op-For
Squids (Navy) will be led by Chaotic Synaptic Activity.
Doggies (Army) led by Matt and Jim of Blackfive
Non-military bloggers should choose a branch the Army to support. Now, normally, I don’t take part in the brutal gentle inter-service rivalry, especially during war. But this is for a very important charity. So, civilian bloggers, choose your branch. Choose wisely…
Sign up for the Army team by enlisting at the Project Valour-IT site and click (under Army) “Join”. We’ll generate links, buzz, and get these heroes some Commo support!
What Valour-IT Needs From You:
So all you bloggers sign up with your choice of service and get the word out. Donate NOW!!!
It’s a tax-deductible donation and eligible for matching funds from companies who do that sort of thing (see: http://soldiersangels.org/valour/irsinfo.html for proof for the cautious).
The snail mail address for those who’d rather donate that way (be sure to put ARMY in big letters on the check):

Soldier’s Angels Gift drive for Fisher House
October 30, 2006 on 3:44 pm | In Articles, Support Our Troops | No CommentsHello,
I know that it may seem soon to be talking about Christmas since it’s not even Halloween yet but last night I was baking sugar cookies and started to sing “It’s begining to look a lot like Christmas every where you go” of course at this point DH cuts in and says with a big smile ”The official day for you to start singing Christmas songs is the day after Thanksgiving”.
At that moment I realized that really we don’t have that much time if we want to send items to love ones that are deployed or in medical facilities. So this morning I decided to look for a program that may interest you in helping.
The Soldier’s Angels is doing a gift drive for Fisher House or you can make donation directly to the Fisher House site. Fisher House™ Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
Thank you~ Denise (hummimg in my head It’s begining to look a lot like Christmas…..)
The following information is from Soldier’s Angels:
This year many families will be with there wounded hero away from their home,
Soldiers Angels are endeavoring to provide a touch of the holidays,

10/27/2006 - FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. (AFPN) – A woman missing in the Harvard, Idaho, area since the afternoon of Oct. 24 was found Oct. 25 by the 36th Rescue Flight here. The Latah County Sheriff’s Office requested the Air Force’s help early on Oct. 25, said Capt. Kevin Burns, a pilot with the 36th RQF. A UH-1N Huey helicopter took off from Fairchild at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 for the trip to the Harvard area. The crew located the woman and transported her to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. “We train with local sheriffs departments and search and rescue teams,” said Maj. Brian Bell, the 36th RQF commander and mission pilot. “Through this relationship they know we are an asset they can utilize in a time of need.” The rescue mission was flown by Major Bell and 1st Lt. Duke Warner. Senior Airman Jacob Bragg served as flight engineer and Tech. Sgt. John Parish was the duty medic on board. This was the 609th save by the 36th RQF, which was activated in 1971. The flight is part of the 336th Training Group here. |
